I have never been in a full-on, professional recording studio.  In my 20+ years of playing music, I have never seen the inside of a studio when it came to making albums.  I have always made my albums in either my home studio or in a friend’s home studio and while I am so very proud of my past albums, I have always dreamed of recording in a studio.  My dream finally came true when Collins Drive decided to take the plunge and record with the awesome Tim Delaney at Electron Garden Studio.

Last night, it was like fucking Christmas Eve.  I tossed and turned in anticipation and I also had stress dreams which included showing up to find the studio burned down and then also showing up and realizing that I couldn’t sing.  I woke up this morning, had my coffee, did some vocal warm ups and stared at the clock until it was finally time to pick up bassist extraordinaire (aka. The Goddess of Thunder) Allison.   With coffee and gear in tow, we made our way to Electron Garden!

When we got there Mikey was already there setting up his drums (I love a casually early drummer).  We spent the first hour or so setting up microphones, setting our amps up, getting our headphones set up, and then all of the sudden we were good to go.  Tim is such an awesome guy and he really made me feel comfortable and calm and I didn’t even need to take a Xanax beforehand.  We ran through a few takes of “Cemetery Angel”, “Ghost Town”, “The Devil is You”, and “I Drive.”  It took a while for me to get used to how things were sounding and that I didn’t have to worry so much about my vocals (I will record those later) and it also took a bit for us to find the groove.  We were a bit rigid but the more we played, the more laid back things felt and the more it started to sound and feel like Collins Drive.  I’m not quite sure we got a real keeper today but I think we did fucking great not really expecting to do any recording today.

All in all, it was a great first day.  It was exciting, it was fun, and I really felt validated as a musician/artist.  It felt so good to just be able to concentrate on just being a musician.  I also have to say that this day also reminded me what an amazing band I am a part of.  We goofed off, we got serious, we made music, we rooted each other on, and honestly, we’re each other’s biggest fans and that really makes this experience an amazing one.  Tomorrow is going to be a long day and I am so fucking excited that I can’t stand it!

More to come…
